The Anatomical Study of the Mandibular Canal, Mental and Mandibular Foramina in Korean Infants
Ryu Ki-Hyung

Abstract
The author¢¥s studies revealed the following results about the mandibular canal, mental and man dibular foramina classified according to sex, age and right and left sides with the data of mandibular body concerning 184 autopsies (Male:86,Female: 98) in Korean infants (Under 5 years of age)
1. The younger the age of the infant, the more the opening of the mental foramens directed upward and inward. With increases in age, the direction changes gradually to upwards and backwards. There are no differences between right and left sides, or between the sex.
2. Predominant forms of mental foramina are oval, round and triangular. Round forms are more common in females than in males and oval forms increase with age.
3. The size of the mental foramen increases for one year after birth. The horizontal measurements are longer than the vertical. There are no differences in size on the two sides. The foramina are bigger in males than in females.
4. The Mental foramina are located just below and exterior to the center of the mandible.
5. The Mandibular foramina are located low down on the inner surface of the ramus. There are no differences between right and left sides, or between the sex.
6. Mandibular foramina open inwards and downwards at birth, and in a more backward and upward direction with aging. There are no differences between the sex.
7. Predominantly, mandibular foramina in the new born have narrow oblique split orifices and become more U-shaped with aging. There are no differences between right and left sides, or between the sex.
8. The length of the mandibular canal differs much according to age and sex. Male:28. 1 mm, Female:26.2mrn at new born
Male:37, 6 mm, Female:33. 7mm at one year of age
Male:50.8 mm, Female:48.6mm at 5 years of age
The measurements show the mandibular canal grows more significantly during the first year of life, in comparison with the next four years. No difference between the sides are observed.
9. In the lateral view, the mandibular canal in the new born period, makes a slight curve which is almost horizontal. With aging, the canal reveals the tendency of leaving the mandibular foramen in an almost vertical direction and at the junction of the ramus with the body of mandible, it turns horizontally and finally upwards toward the mental foramen.
10. Looked at from above, the mandibular canal makes a smooth S--shaped curve to the mental foramen. In the new born period, the anterior part of the mandibular canal is situated near the middle of the body of the mandibe, and the posterior part is near the middle of the ramus. With aging the canal is found nearer the inner surface of these bones.
